Martial Arts School Owners: Leave Your Comfort Zone

How do you feel about leaving your comfort zone? Do you avoid it or embrace it? For any business owner, leading a team through unchartered territory can be a daunting prospect. But it is an essential experience in any entrepreneur’s pathway to growth. As the owner of a martial arts school, you’re bound to feel a personal connection to your clients as well as the team you lead. This personal connection can be the barrier dojo owners encounter when it comes to breaking free from their comfort zone. The thought, ‘what if I let my clients down?’ can scare you into inaction. According to a recent article published in Forbes, having the confidence to leave your comfort zone is especially important for people who are self-employed. If you try to view the experience as a chance to differentiate yourself from your competitors and create a lasting impression in the mind of your customers, your positive attitude will frame your results.

What about the risk?

We instinctively fear leaving our comfort zones because it is associated with risk. You shouldn’t ignore this fact. Instead make note of all the potential risks, regardless of size, so you understand the scope of what could happen. No matter what, it’s important to remember the motto “with great risk comes great reward”. Here’s why: even if you fail in the face of risk, you are still rewarded. You are rewarded by the failures of your risk-taking through the lessons you learn as a result. Starting your own business is a process of trial and error as you learn the individual characteristics and limits of your business. Take it from Richard Branson, one of the most successful business owners on the planet, who believes losing together as a team benefits your business. Says Richard, “No matter what industry you work in, the nature of business is change, and so while you can prepare for every possibility, some new, unexpected circumstance is likely to thwart you. The only thing that's meaningful about such setbacks is whether you bounce back.”

Embracing the unknown

If you’re someone who struggles to leave the comfort of routine, there are things you can do to build your confidence. TIMA co-founders Graham McDonnell and Phil Britten recommend martial arts business owners practice leaving their comfort zones in their personal life to equip them with skills for doing so in business. In June of this year, the pair trekked through the remote Kimberly for Telethon, completely removed from any familiar environment. Being so far out of their comfort zone taught them lessons that were applicable to their own businesses, which they reflected on in the first episode of the Martial Arts Business Success podcast. As unique as it was, this type of experience wasn’t a one-off for the boys. This month Phil and Graham have been climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to again support the Telethon cause. The TIMA co-founders are no strangers to leaving comfort zones, so why not let them guide you in your business journey? Get started with the 5-star solution today to begin your path to success.
